Most basketball fans can tell the Washington Wizards have a deep roster full of talent. And a lot of people would say Gilbert Arenas is one of their favourite basketball players. The fun loving, self-referred 'goof ball' is easily one of the top point guards the NBA has had this season and probably the most controversial.
It's a shame the Wizards have never caught a break in the last few seasons. But, perhaps part of that is because they gambled $111 million of their salary cap on a six-year contract for their supposed star player Gilbert Arenas in the 2008 offseason.
However, Arenas unfortunately has been able to play in just 10 games of the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. He has since returned and shown he's a warrior on the court with great performances lately. Although, the Wizards still only have a 12-26 win-loss record as of 16/1/10.
The Wizards have seemed to be more successful whenever Arenas takes less shots in games, while assisting plays more often. And the Wizards have never been a terrific defensive team, which would explain their poor record.
Even with great players like Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas and fantastic role-players like Brendan Haywood the Wizards still lack what it takes to win a lot of games.
And now that their star player Arenas has lately pleaded guilty to felony gun possession, they may want to think about voiding his contract if at all possible if they ever want to get back to winning ways. As it would free up a lot of salary cap space for the All-Star class of free agents this year like Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade or perhaps LeBron James.
Arenas is an All-Star player, don't get me wrong. But, the Wizards obviously need to find another way of playing if they just can't get a winning formula with what they already have. And seeing as Arenas could be facing jail time of between half a year and 2 years, they might want to seriously consider this sooner than later.
